Today I was shopping for my dachshund Kody when another customer was asking questions about different chew toys for her dog. I am always looking for new things for Kody to chew on. I don’t know if dachshunds are always such voracious chewers, but my Dachshund is.
I don’t give him rawhide strips because he will chew them till they’re soft and swallow them. I’m surprise rawhide works for anyone, really. He usually has rope toys, but now he kind of rips those apart and swallows a lot of string in the process.
So I asked the guy at the store what he had recommended, and he said to get a bully stick. I hadn’t bought one before but he and another employee said the dogs usually bite off the ends a little bit at a time and never have the problem of swallowing large pieces. Then you take it away before it gets small enough for them to be able to swallow.
I later looked up bully sticks on my iPhone to see what they were made of. If you don’t already know, you’ll be surprised, it’s bull penis!
He’s had it for about a half hour now and hasn’t worn it down too much, which is amazing. But he’s going at it full steam and having a great time. I think bully sticks may have a large part (ahem) in our future. And they may replace the rope toys if all goes well.
