Steak For Puppy

I needed a new treat to give Kody, so I thought steak might do the trick. I got the cheapest steak they had and fried it up in some Pam. It was thin so it didn't take long and it's also really lean. Then I chopped it up into bits for training. It worked, Kody loves it, almost too much.

I noticed an interesting thing, he loved it so much and it's so new, he actually tried barking to get it. I can see why he did this, in times past barking would have resulted in treats so it was worth a try. However, I was sure to not give him any at any time near barking. In this case, I knew what he was doing and I didn't get upset by it. I know now that since it didn't work he probably won't try it again. And I'm kind of glad that the steak is that motivating for him.

Cost wise, it was pretty darn cheap. I don't remember how much it was, but it was less than two dollars. It is enough steak that I don't know if I'll be able to use it all before it will go bad in the fridge. If I am extremely generous with it, it will last four days, so I guess that's OK, so maybe five days. Next time, I'll probably put some raw steak in the freezer and cook up a couple of days worth at a time.

I'm wondering if I will be able to cycle through chicken, hot dogs, and steak or if I'll have to continually find more and more exotic treats. Buffalo, duck, oh liver! I never though of cooking up liver, but I bet he'd love that!

We doxie owners are a sorry lot! One look from those adorable dogs, or a whimper of discontent, and we fall over ourselves to make things better. I’m guilty as charged. I was tougher raising our kids. These dogs have the power to control their humans I tell you!

That said, Oskar loves liver and duck. And yes, you will likely begin to cycle through your proteins as you attempt to keep your cute, 4 legged Anthony Bourdain happy. Kody may even let you think that you’re in charge once in awhile!!
