Funny Scent Reactive Barking

I said in a recent post how I opened the door one day and Kody let out a jarring howl/bark that rattled my nerves. Right before I started writing this we went out so Kody could relieve himself, which he did. Then a stranger walked right next to him, almost touching him, and he was fine. Then the sniffing started. He was onto some scent, and when he had processed it for a while let out a sound like, "WOO-Woo-woo-woo-woo-woo-woo!" It was sort out a howl, but it was obviously meant to report he had smelled something that was of very high importance. At first, I could help but laugh. I have never heard a dog make such a funny sound. Then I tried to gently get his attention and get his focus. He was actually pretty mellow, but very focused on the scent. He did it a couple more times, and I took him inside because it was pretty loud and I didn't want to disturb the neighbors so late.

It's not really a problem, in fact, I wish I could understand what he's doing better to give him good opportunities to do it at a good time. I'll just have to keep watching and learning. Actually, it would be really fun to train him to make that sound in response to a command, since it's so original. But since that's the first time I've heard it, and I have no idea what caused it, that's probably not going to happen.

Kody is getting really good at the Canine Genius Leo and loves it. I love it too, it's such a good toy for him because he's normally such a chewer and this works his other skills. I just sit with him and watch him now because it's so interesting. He gets his whole dinner out in about 10 minutes.
