Rottweiler Puppy

Yesterday I had a meeting with a business that always has dogs around. Usually it's a Rottweiler and an Irish Terrier. The Irish Terrier is still a puppy, but is basically a teenager and the Rottweiler is great with her.

I had followed Rottweiler's human mom to a different office I hadn't been to before. We got out of our cars and she seemed to have some stuff to sort out before going inside so I waited patiently. Then before I knew what was happening, she says, "Matt, why don't you carry the puppy!" and next thing you know I'm handed a 10 week old Rottweiler puppy. The puppy was so mellow and gentle, which is why the breeder went out of its way to call my client and offer her this puppy.

Of course, I was in puppy heaven. There's something about puppies that just makes me so happy. I couldn't stop smiling.

The interesting thing about a 10 week old Rottweiler puppy is that they are already almost too big to carry. With dachshunds you use a football grip when you pick up a dog to support the dog's back. I tried this with the Rottweiler and it didn't quite work out. It was like holding a big soft teddy bear, but it's still such a puppy. Even when he went potty you could tell he was still not quite aware of what was going on, like it was almost a surprise. There's a bit of cognitive dissonance caused by the difference between his size and his development level, at least for someone who's a dachshund owner.

The puppy went under a table and slept for most of the meeting. We all thought the puppy was incredibly mellow, but now I wonder if Rottweiler puppies at this stage of development are always a little more mellow because they grow at such an incredibly fast pace.

The older dog seems to be fine with the puppy, although he seems to be a little more alert about getting his share of attention. As his human mom says, he's still the king.
